SUMMARY:POSTPONED – Fireside Chat - Pomfret's Gilded Age
DESCRIPTION:Postponed until November….. \n  \nPomfret’s Gilded Age and the Railroad that Built a Summer Haven for the Rich \nPomfret Station (now Putnam) connected Anna Whistler to her family and friends in Stonington\, and New York in the 1850’s. By the 1870’s an even better railway came to Pomfret which ushered  the Gilded Age and a new era in Pomfret’s history. Wealthy families from New York and Newport built large estates\, gentleman farms\, and summer cottages to get away from the heat and bustle of the city. The farms produced fresh eggs\, vegetables\, meat\, cheese\, and milk for the summer guests and were shipped to their town houses in the winter months by rail. The convenience of the railroad brought vacationers to the newly built boarding houses and country inns which took in the emerging middle class. Up until the 1920’s Pomfret was known as “Little Newport” with tennis courts\, golf courses\, a racetrack and casino on Pomfret Street\, and countryside drives and walks organized by the Inns. Walter Hinchman will take us on a virtual tour of some of the grand estates and summer homes from that era and Stewart Chute will share some railroad history. Costumes from the gilded Age encouraged!

SUMMARY:Lui Collins & Anand Nayak
DESCRIPTION:Lui Collins & Anand Nayak \nWhen Lui Collins emerged on the folk scene in 1975\, her impressive presence and ability to warmly engage with the audience was remarkable for a young performer\, and it had a significant impact on her listeners. And as New Hampshire writer and musician Gordon Peery notes\, “now\, fifty years later\, I saw how her gift for filling a room with love and joy—not to mention wit—has only been made even more substantial with the passing of time. Her performance is so heartfelt that it’s easy to miss how professional it is. Uplifting\, and remarkable.” Lui is joined by guitarist/Grammy-nominated producer Anand Nayak. Anand’s classical background and wide musical exploration in his formative years grants him a unique ability to play with and enhance the music of a wide variety of musicians. This makes him an ideal fit for Lui’s eclectic repertoire\, ranging from originals and North American folk classics to Brazilian Bossa nova. While Lui and Anand’s nearly two decades of collaboration “is apparent in the ease and precision of their performance\,” they bring “a freshness and spontaneity to their music that creates almost visible currents of energy between them. At times it’s almost like they have the excitement of discovering each other for the first time.” – Gordon Peery \nAdmission is Cash Only. \nYOUTUBE LINK FOR LIVE SHOW
